On Subway Ticket Price Increase
The Beijing municipal govern-ment has reformed the current low-cost subway ticket system and increased ticket price in order to cut the overall cost of transport subsidies in the city. 1
Such a policy has led to a heated debate, with some supporting the policy, while others say it would be counterproductive. 2 People in favor of the policy said that the reform should be carried out because proper increase of the subway ticket price can ease the great transportation pressure to some extent. 3 However, people against the policy said that rising fares is undesirable because it raises people’s living cost. They said the government should provide other social welfare services to the public, if not, the government should not abandon the subsidy policy. Besides, low subway ticket price can encourage green travel. 3
From my perspective, variable ticket pricing as a solution is feasible. 4 The subway charges passengers according to the lengths of trips. In that way, it is effective to make cuts in the subsidies with proper subway ticket price while Beijing’s public transport system still sees a large number of passengers.

北京市政府就目前地铁票务系统低价情况进行了改革，提升了票价，以全面削减城市交通运输补贴。
