There the boy began to imitate the cries of merchants all day long. So his mother decided to move again. When they arrived at the third place, his mother found their neighbor was a butcher, so she moved for the third time. This time, they lived in a house next to a school. Inspired by the teachers and students, Mencius began to study. Mencius's mother nodded contentedly and said,“This is where my son should live.”

孟子是中国古代著名的思想家、教育家，是儒家学派的代表人物之一。他继承并发扬了孔子的学说，后人合称二人为“孔孟”，并将他们的哲学观点概括为“孔孟之道（The doctrines of Confucius and Mencius）”。孔子和孟子都推崇“仁”的思想，但他们的观点有所不同。孔子的“仁”偏向待人宽厚，而孟子则更愤世嫉俗。这是因为孟子生活在战国时期（the Warring States Period），诸侯交相攻伐，仁义早被抛诸脑后，百姓流离失所。因此，孟子对于社会与人的密切联系有了更深入的认识，进而提出了“仁政”的观念。从孔子的“仁”到孟子的“仁政”是从社会道德到社会政治的一个飞跃。孔子的施政纲领比较简单、原始，不外乎“礼乐”二端，而孟子的观点则更为明确：“民为贵，社稷次之，君为轻”。
