The whole village soon learnt that a large sum ofmoney had been lost. Sam Benton, the localbutcher, had lost his wallet while taking his savingsto the post office. Sam was sure that the walletmust have been found by one of the villagers, but itwas not returned to him. Three months passed,and then one morning, Sam found his walletoutside his front door. It had been wrapped upin newspaper and it contained half the moneyhe had lost, together with a note which said: 'Athief, yes, but only50 per cent a thief!' Two months later, some more money was sentto Sam with another note: 'Only 25 per cent a thief now!' In time, all Sam's money waspaid back in this way. The last note said: 'I am 100 percent honest now!'

4. Three months passed, and then one morning, Sam found his wallet outside his frontdoor.
3个月过去了，后来在一天早上，萨姆在他家大门外发现了他的钱包。
语言点 表示一段时间以后另外一件事情发生的三种常用表达方式：
1) ...passed and then... (Lesson 9 )
2) some time later... (Lesson 27)
3) nearly... passed before... (Lesson 33)
5. It had been wrapped up in newspaper and it contained half the money he had lost,together with a note which said: “A thief, yes, but only 50 per cent a thief !”
钱包是用报纸包着的，里面有他丢的钱的一半，而且还附着一张纸条，上面写着：“一个小偷，是的，但只是一个50%的小偷!”

语言点3 together with( = with)介词短语作伴随状语。
6. Two months later, some more money was sent to Sam with another note: 'Only 25percent a thief now!'
又过了两个月，又有一些钱送还给了萨姆，又附了一张字条：“这回只是一个25%的小偷了。”
语言点 one，two等数量词以及some，many，much等加比较级起修饰作用：
