新闻汉译英方法总结（2） 2012年5月7日

今日讲解：词汇篇

词汇是学习英语的基础，更是翻译的基础。词汇的运用对翻译水平的高低，以及翻译的的准确和逻辑性都有很重大的影响。这周我们就稍微总结一下词汇的微妙。

(1 ) Milestone：[多单数] a very important event in the development of something. 【新闻汉译英 2012年5月1日】

从英英解释中我们得出milestone 已包含发展意思。所以：

新的世贸中心建设已取得一个里程碑的进展。

The new World Trade Center has reached a milestone.【新闻汉译英 2012年5月1日】

The construction of new Word Trade Centre has reached a milestone of process. (此处红色为多余)

另外Milestone的同义词 landmark。

The construction of world trade center has got a landmark developing. (前有construction 后可省略 developing)

(2)high 和tall 的区别：【新闻汉译英 2012年5月2日】

High：(opposite low)可用来描述大多数事物，尤指该事物或其顶部离地面的高度。(不用于形

容人、动物或植物)

Eg: a high mountain. The shelf is too high, I can’t reach it.

Tall:(opposite short),is used for people and animal. 多形容人，树等;

也可用于高而窄的东西，尤指这个东西从顶到底的全距离。

Eg: He is very tall.

A tall building like the Empire State Building.

decide 和determine 的区别：

(1)当决心做某事时，二者基本相似。

Eg: He determined to learn medicine. (He decided to learn medicine.)

他决定学医。

(2)Determine: 有是...的决定因素;形成;影响,decide 则没有。

Eg: Demand determines supply. 需求决定供给。

But feet not stories, generally speaking, determine whether a building ranks as the tallest.【新闻汉译英2012年5月2日】

Layer 和story的区别：

Layer: A layer of a material or substance is a quantity or piece of it that covers a surface or that is between two other things. (覆盖)层

Eg: ozone layer 臭氧层。 地质结构中的岩石层，也用layer

Story: a floor or level of a building. (建筑物的)层

Eg: But feet not stories, generally speaking, determine whether a building ranks as the tallest 【新闻汉译英 2012年5月2日】

(3)注意同义词的总结，这是英语的一大特色，多同义词，不喜欢重复同一个单词。

(1) 如果不能认识缺点。【新闻汉译英 2012年5月3日】

If they fail to recognize their faults/disadvantages/shortcomings/weakness.

(2) 因为他们对自身领导能力的自我评价要高于上司或同事对他们的评价。

They rate/evaluate/consider/judge/estimate/the self-evaluation on their own leadership skills higher than their boss or co-workers do.

总之，还是建议大家多查字典，看英英解释，多品味英语单词的内涵，切不可照搬汉语意思记忆，多思考英语的思维方式。殊不知，英语单词的意思和汉语许多情况下是不能一词一词对应的，许多英文单词的意思用汉语可能要一个短语，甚至一句话才能表达清楚，主要还是文化的不同，表达的不同。
